Fandom Stocking, Snowflake Challenge, and other ways of avoiding real life

Jan 08, 2015 17:07

I'm trying to hide from real life: L's big test is tonight, and I'm trying to walk the line between making sure she's focused and prepared and taking it seriously and... psyching her out past a point of usefulness. I'm not sure I'm doing a very good job of it. (I would be much less nervous if it were ME taking the test... XP)

Anyway, so, at least Read more... )

I can enjoy high school AUs, but I hate it when they are USAmerican high school AUs when canon is set in another country - so USAmerican high school AUs for football or Harry Potter or anime. I'd love to see public school AU for HP or Gymnasium AU for German football or Japanese high school AUs for anime, but of course no-one writes those, sigh....:\

Hm, that's a fair point. I'm trying to think if I've come across fics like that in my fandoms, and mostly the fandoms where I've read and enjoyed high school AUs. Mostly they tend to be secondary-world fandoms anyway, so a US high school (which, yes, is what those things read to me as) is as fair a mapping as any other...

(Hogwarts AUs, of course, transplant the story to England. And I'd be happy to read local-magical-school AUs for the non-English canons there, too, but that's adding an additional dimension of change, so I don't see too many people writing those, and it would probably lack the sorting aspect of Hogwarts anyway, as well as the familiarity.)

The internet is a great place to avoid RL, I've been know to do this more than a few times:)

I like the banners you have made, the mice are cute!

It sure is! It holds nearly endless reserves of things I can distract myself with :)

And thank you! (I've been meaning to tell you, I really like your wintry bird icon!)

All of the icons I use are credited, feel free to snag if you like. I actually have the one you used for your comment!

Ha, so you do! That's pretty awesome! :)

Living in the land of no snow, I don't really need more than one wintry icon, but thank you for the offer! :) (and having looked through your icons just now, you have a lot of really pretty ones!)

::waves at junta::

obligatory tge mention! but, honestly, even aside from that glaring example, you're such a solid part of my reading landscape right now it's hard to distinguish individual details. i write some reviews thinking like, 'i think hamsterwoman will like that' or 'i wonder what hamsterwoman will make of it', and it's a happy feeling :D

Saaame. I think you've probably had more influence on what I read in 2014 than anyone or anything else... Like, Inda was obviously because of you, and while I'd heard of Kate Daniels before, I picked up the Ilona Andrews books because of you (which ended up being my most numerous reads), and 2015 is shaping up to be similar, since my first book of 2015 was The Cloud Roads (even MORE adorable than before once the fledgelings showed up!), and right now I'm trying to decide whether I want to read more Raksura next or dive into Max Gladstone :D

It is indeed a very happy feeling! :D

if you want more found family feels, you need third raksura books. it's off the charts. i mean, with all my love to gladstone and all :P

I have a feeling I will stick with Raksura, because I keep thinking about various scenes from the first book and replaying them in my mind, which is probably a sign it wouldn't be fair to whatever I pick up next anyway :P

Oh, and your comment reminded me I meant to go reread your review of Cloud Roads *ambles over*

Good luck for L's test!

Hmmm ... I've actually got quite a few books on my to read list now because of you. For example the Alex Verus and Matthew Swift series ... :D

Thank you! (She thinks she did OK, but it was a long test, and late in the evening... *fingers crossed*)

Huh, I thought you were one of the people who had rec'd Alex Verus to *me*, haha, but maybe not. I definitely got the books from you, but it's possible that we heard about them at roughly the same time?

(I'm in the mood for snappy urban fantasy again, so I'm actually reading Taken right now, after a longish break from Alex.)

Those are cute icons! I especially like the Temeraire ones, since I know and love the characters.

silly timewasting game you found
LOL 2048 fits perfectly. I avoided it at first exactly because of the timewasting warning. Then I tried it and was reasonable with it. And finally I got better at it and the timewasting did happen and it was glorious.

Thank you! :)

Heh, well, I'm glad the 2048 timewasting was enjoyable, at least! I was pretty much over my addiction, and then my friend on Facebook posted a screenshot where she got to 8192, which I've never done (I've been close, with 4096, 2048, 1024 and some smaller tiles), and now I feel like I need to take it up again to see if I can match her :P

I was always careful to stop at the 2048 tile, to avoid this kind of ill effect. XD

You are definitely wiser than I am in this regard! :P (I am... not very good at stopping myself when it comes to things like that :P)
