Return of the memes and poems

Apr 28, 2013 14:38

Oh hey, it's Terry Pratchett's birthday! (Tumblr has handily taken over the duties of informing me of important world events, now that LJ has gotten so quiet...) So, yeah, happy birthday to Sir Terry! In honor of the occasion, the Discworld meme goes first today:

Discworld: favorite actor and actress )

discworld, vorkosigan saga, dragaera, lowell, berkeley, geekery, work, fandom meme, project: greetings from the myriad, poem

Okay firstly, le gasp shock at you not fangirling Susan naturally. Because I was utterly smitten since Soul Music (which may or may not be because Kay already told em Susan was awesome) but when I reached Hogfather and read many of Susan's policies which seem to mirror mine "Susan says don't get scared, get angry" and the likes, I was totally in love. And thief of Time just makes me adore her even more because of the strict "Miss Susan" persona. I only wish I was as cool a teacher as her. *hangs out with her own students at coffee shops all the time, usually with fellow lecturer J in toe* XD

Anyway, I had no idea Michelle Dockery played Susan up until a few weeks ago when I googled Hogfather. And I squeed the place down because Lady Mary duh! The flatmate was quite scared of my midnight squeeing but he doesn't understand the important stuff. I also loved Teatime because he was sufficiently creepy (as I imagined him).

It's very odd about me and Susan, because she is the kind of character I would normally expect to love. And I do like her! Especially her way with children -- I love the governess vignettes -- but to a much lesser degree than I love other PTerry characters. I think it's probably that the Death sub-series on the whole is less interesting to me than the Watch and the Witches, in both the themes and the plots, so Susan probably suffers from that to some degree. But, yeah, Susan is generally my answer to the "character everyone loves and I don't" questions on memes when Discworld comes up. (And Soul Music is one of those Discworld books that don't do much for me at all. But admittedly that's largely because real-world music isn't my thing, so I'm doubtless missing a lot of the jokes as well as the passion ( ... )

Joining in the chorus of surprised reactions ^^ Especially so since Susan was my biggest love for a long while there (which is a bit surprising given her governess role, seeing how I'm not particularly kid-friendly, but her awesomeosity was too hard to resist!)

(shut up, these are vital questions, OK)
Gorram straight! I face the challenge of only really being attracted to fictional dudes in the context of shipping them with someone else (and usually with another dude, which doesn't help), but I appreciate the seriousness of deciding on one's fictional spouse. Duv Galeni does sound just like your type, though - I wish you many happy fictional years together!

It's hard not to default to SHOPPING, because it's a moment that basically defined CMoA (but also, with Vorkosiverse subtelty, acknowledges more than just Cordelia's badassity, but also the human cost and the wonderful interpersonal relationships involvedHeh, this would definitely be in my top three so far, since I have Issues picking one singular favorite moment out of everything. Or I may have to sort them by character... But this was definitely one of Cordelia's finest moments! If/when there's ever a movie/miniseries adaption, can't wait to see the full glory of this onscreen ( ... )

Haha, thank you! You are definitely invited to my fictional wedding :)

I don't typically react to favorite characters this way, but Galeni is that very rare combination of character I find fascinating with person I would actually enjoy spending time with if I knew him in real life, so :P

It was kind of interesting to reread the titrator poem and see that it was pretty creepy in its imagery. I didn't remember it as such -- mostly I remembered it as "ooh, neat machinery and pretty colors!" but there's actually a fair bit sinister there. Huh. And yay, I'm glad you had fun with these! :D

Yay, thanks! Now to find the perfect fictional wedding present...

It's a great mix of "I <3 science!" and "...and then it gained sentience and started eating people a la 50s sci-fi," lol.

Mwahaha >:D It's the mollusk comparisons, isn't it. Nobody likes a sentient mollusk :P

I thought Marc Warren was fantastic as Teatime, so creepy! He definitely brought a lot to the role. (Actually, I've seen him in fair amount of things and 'fantastic and creepy' usually describes him, haha). I thought Charles Dance was a great Vetinari, though his hair color threw me off too!

Duv Galeni is a fine choice for a fictional husband!

I don't think I've seen Marc Warren in anything else, but he was delightfully creepy as Teatime, and just the right flavor of creepy, too.

If I just listened to Dance's Vetinari, he was just right, but there was enough discrepancy between his appearance and my mental image (the hair color being the most prominent thing, but there must've been other things, too, like general body shape and whatnot) that there was a bit of tension there for me.

I think the "42" poem should be posted on the door of every child's bedroom. :P

I don't suppose there was a Google doodle for PTerry's birthday yesterday, was there?

I've happily used it as justification for my own messy nature :)

And, ooh, I wish I'd thought to check for a Google doodle! Although googling around doesn't turn up anything, so I'm guessing there wasn't one.
