Haven't read "Obsession" yet- is it an Alex/Milo one? 'Cause I basically only read Kellerman for those two. They're fun.

Yup, it's Alex and Milo, although there are a bunch of other characters in it, like Petra Connor and some other detectives. Also, Rick makes an actual onscreen appearance -- has he shown up in any other books beyond Alex talking to him on the phone? Also, there are all these random Jews for some reason...

I think we might've seen Rick very briefly... or maybe I'm just thinking back to Milo and Alex talking/thinking about him.

Random Jews = lol. Kellerman seems to be partial to those. They tend to be preternaturally good, for some reason.

He does seem to be partial to them. Part of the reson I read Kellerman is the deft hand with minor characters, and part of the pleasure of *that* is the random Jew spotting :)

The ones in this book weren't really preternaturally good, though I agree with that observation in general.

I really need to reread Small Gods. It was one of the first Pterry books I ever read, back when I was fifteen, and I barely remember anything about it except that I really, really liked it.

And I'll have to check out Wyrd Sisters. So far, I haven't cared much for the witches' books... but anything with references to Shakespeare, Beckett, and the Marx Brothers has to be worth a try. ;)

I was actually thinking about you while reading Small Gods, and that if that's not one of the Discworld novels you've read that you totally should. :)

Which Witches books have you read so far? I definitely like them less than the Watch books, and probably the standalones (on average), but I do like Granny Weatherwax a lot, and more in the earlier books than in the later ones, I've found, now that I've actually read some of the earlier ones.

Yeah, of the Discworld books I've read, Small Gods and Reaper Man are my favorites. And of the two, I know Small Gods is the better book. I just love reading about Death. ;)

I can't recall offhand which Witches books I've read... I know I read Witches Abroad, which must have been totally unmemorable, because I have no idea what it was even about, or who was in it... Granny Weatherwax and some elves, I think. I know I've read one or two others, but I can't recall what they were.

The problem I have with Pterry's books, and the reason I haven't read very many of them, is that (just the opposite of you) even though I love his writing and the ideas behind it, I rarely have much interest in any of his characters. I think Death is actually the only Discworld character I've really liked. The other characters do tend to be amusing, in a bumbling, incompetent sort of way, but not... I don't know, dimensional enough for me to really care about them. I think we talked about this before, and you mentioned Sam Vimes as a character who ( ... )

I haven't read Witches Abroad, but I think the elves one might've been Lords and Ladies, actually (which I also haven't read). Actually, other than Wyrd Sisters and Maskerade, I've only read Carpe Jugulum among the Witches books, plus the Tiffany Aching book where Granny first makes an appearance.

Sam Vimes and the Watch books is definitely the way to go for character connections. The other character that did this for me is Moist Von Lipwig from Going Postal (and now Making Money as well). Of course, the other character I really love is Vetinari, but he only has cameo roles, so it's not like one can read the books for *him* -- and he's not the sort of character you connect with on an emotional level.

Of the Watch books, I think Night Watch is the best, though I don't think I'd start reading the series there, Jingo was quite good, and I think Fifth Elephant was what I'd started with and that was the point where I really fell in love with Discworld (after reading a bunch of books about Rincewind and being amused but no more than that ( ... )
