In a word, food. One of my hams, Gina, was very nervous about being picked up when we first got her, and would actually panic and try to leap from my hands. So I gave her shelled unsalted sunflower seeds (you can buy them that way at the grocery store) before, during, and after handling time. She associated me with good things, and calmed down completely within a few weeks. Now Gina is such a huge lovebug, and adores being cuddled.

I also like Ky's bathtub idea.
