your best bet is to bring him to the vet ASAP. They should be able to see what's wrong and give the right medication. The earlier the better

I can't take him to the vet tonight, but I can take him tomorrow morning. My car's having issues and the buses don't run all night here.

Do you think he'll be okay?

That is, at least for tonight. Trust me, I'll be there as soon as it opens.

What's being at the vet's office like? What are appropriate things to ask and for him/her to say?

I've never been to a vet before and I'm really nervous.

I hope he ends up okay, he's my first hamster and I adopted him after someone abandoned him. I've only had him for a few days.

I haven't even finished changing him over onto only hamster food yet. I'll be at the vet tomorrow morning. Is there anything I can do for him tonight?

maybe the fact he's not eating food that's made specifically for him may be the problem. hamster food is what he's supposed to be eating. whatever he's eating now may be starting to disagree with him.

He was eating nutriphase rat/mouse food when I got him on saturday. I've been changing what he's eating slowly to make the stress less.

I'm guessing he's about a year old, but I'm not a good judge of hamster ages.

He came in without water or a wheel. He had pine bedding and didn't have anything to chew on. I just wanted to do right by him. I'm so scared for him.

"What are the symptoms of wet tail?

Hamsters with wet tail are generally lethargic with a loss of appetite and generally stop grooming. They have a very fluid diarrhea, and develop a wet, soiled, and matted area around the anus and tail. The diarrhea causes them to become dehydrated, so their eyes may appear dull and sunken. They may sit 'hunched up' and be irritable because of the abdominal discomfort. In serious cases, blood may be seen in the diarrhea or around the anus, and/or the rectum may protrude out of the anus because of the constant straining.

Wet tail is a very serious disease, and hamsters with the above symptoms should be examined by a veterinarian immediately."

if it's just his poops at this time then it might just be diarrhea? has he been eating too much fruits and veggies? iceberg lettuce?

I thought all diarrhea was wet tail for hamsters. I'm still going to the vet, but hopefully it'll just be that I'm overreacting.

He's still grooming and he's still eating. I wouldn't have even known that something was wrong if I hadn't put him in his ball. Poor guy.

naa, they can also get diarrhea from overeating things with lots of water in them. but yea still go to the vet. it's a very good sign he's still doing his normal things.

Nope. Diarrhea can also be caused by a change in diet, or by excessive watery foods (apples, celery, cucumber, watermelon, iceberg lettuce...) Since you're switching him over to a more appropriate diet, his stomach might just be a little upset at the change. With a Syrian, I'd definitely watch closely to make sure the diarrhea doesn't develop into wet tail though. A vet visit as a precaution would be a good idea.

Aww, poor boy! Definatly take him to the vet as soon as you can... Just to be safe. I brought Sundae to the vet in her hamster ball (with bedding in it). I just had to hold it the whole time so she didn't roll...

Good luck! I've had hams with wet tail before and it's never fun... But it's always come on all of a sudden (atleast to my memory), so hopefully if it's just a little, it's normal diahrrea and he'll be okay... *shrug*
