Black Friday vs. Buy Nothing Day

Nov 29, 2008 01:04

In previous years I have been inclined to observe Buy Nothing Day over joining the frenzied hordes of bargain-hunters looking for Black Friday doorbusting deals. I like shiny new stuff as well as anyone, but, at the same time, I am kind of freaked out by the constant drumbeat of, "Consume! Consume! Consume!" that underlies so much of American ( Read more... )

I have decided that this year my mom, my partner, and my great-niece are getting presents. Everyone else will get a cool holiday card. I'll splurge on the cards, since I'm cutting back on the presents.

I love MOMA holiday cards.

I can't speak to tanning salons, but nail salons are usually run by recent immigrants trying to realize the American Dream. And nail wraps are a big part of Caribbean culture.

My family hasn't done gifts in a long time -- not for anyone under 18 anyway. My oldest nephew turns 8, and he has 7 siblings/cousins ( ... )

I'm just going along as I usually do. Still shopping for clothes from my favorite retailers (Eddie Bauer, JJill), as so much of what I have is too large (as in falling-down large). I don't do thrift stores (they never have my size, and I'm pretty fussy about the condition of my clothing). I feel a bit bad about this.

The other major area for spending is the horse. We still need a dressage saddle, and I may try to find a replacement for my "all-purpose" saddle, because I can't use a dressage saddle in open shows. There may be a second bridle in there, though not as expensive as the first. And some work on the trailer.
