We are in NYC, city of awesomeness. Yesterday in a nutshell:

Took subway to Union Sq. and walked to Otafuku to meet kimberlogic for the afternoon, had tasty okonomiyaki and yakisoba for lunch, then walked around through a street fair and the largest Halloween costume shop I've ever seen. Had way too much chocolate stuff at Max Brenner, then walked K. back ( Read more... )

Who *does* say New York isn't a walking city? Are they kidding? For all that there are people who firmly believe that a cab or limo is required to go anywhere, that's really not most of the population. And it's a wonderful place to walk.

It's amazing how many things there are in my own backyard that I'm not even aware of, but then again I'm not much of a foodie. I can't imagine anyone describing NYC as other than a walking city, though to experience all five boroughs subway and ferry rides are required. How long are you staying?

Depending on one's level of dedication, subway or ferry rides aren't required to reach every borough. But that sure would be a long walk (40 miles?) if you wanted to hit all five; better as a day-long bike ride.

Pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and proposals for a walkway have yet to receive approvals, funding, and implementation. Thus one cannot walk to Staten Island from Brooklyn or Manhattan, and non-drivers must either board a bus or a ferry.

No, it's doable, but the side trip to NJ is what makes it 40 miles; my apologies if I was being obscure. (I included and then edited out my routing as too wordy and nerdy, but anyway: start on the SI side of the Bayonne Bridge. Cross the bridge, north along the shore to the GW Bridge, cross back into Manhattan and continue east into the Bronx on the bridge of your choice, south along the river to the Willis Ave. Bridge, then south back through Manhattan again and south along the East River to the bridge of your choice into Queens, then continue south to Brooklyn.)
