How much is McCain's choice of Palin as running-mate really because she's a fellow maverick who suits his style, and how much is one more desperate stab at snatching Clinton supporters away from Obama ( Read more... )

And how much of it is a desperate attempt to cement the Christianists?

She's anti-gay marriage, pushes for "Creation Science" in schools and fervently anti-abortion. This is to cement the base.

And the idea that Hillary supporters will vote for her because she's a woman even though she diametrically opposes everything Hillary stands for is insulting to a degree I can't even comprehend.

This whole "experience is critical" thing evidently also just fell off the "straight talk express" too.

It's an obvious and cynical attempt to:
*Grab Hillary Votes
*Present a candidate who is hard to "attack", while having free reign to attack everything
*Artificially introduce youth and faux-outsider cachet to counter the entrenched fossil.
*Give him a female counter to the "historic" element of Obama's blackness.

All . . . that said . . . she *is* kinda hot ;-)

She's like the anti-McCain: She's young, "historically-gendered," ultra conservative... It's almost like her nomination was chosen by a committee according to some bullet points. Hm-mm...

I want with all my heart to believe this. So why do I suddenly feel so very nervous?

Because you've been paying attention to the disaster that has been American politics for the past 8 (hell, 100) years.

A bigger factor might be that she helps get the social conservatives (Religious Right) motivated and on his side. They've been pretty tepid on McCain in the past. Focus on the Family Dobson going so far as to saying he wouldn't vote for McCain at one point. He has since backslided some. This should provide a reason for a complete cave-in for McCain.
