Winter in NZ

OMG! The country is closing down, further south! I bet there are plenty of people having snow days at the moment, anyway - major roads are closed all over the place and the ferries and planes out of Wellington are stalled. It's not as bad in Auckland because we just don't get snow (when I say that, the last time it snowed here it melted on ( Read more... )

I am not a fan of winter at all. I do not like being cold! That said, I'm like you - lucky enough to live where snow is a rarity! It's crazy though, how the weather can completely shut down a city, even a large one.

Awesome on walking to and from the train! It's a nice little bit of exercise and chatting with your husband during the walk makes it so much more enjoyable. During certain parts of the year though I'd be right with you in regards to hopping the bus. :D

Me too! Thank goodness it doesn't often get this cold here, and that's quite enough for me, although the constant rain is more wearing than snow would be in some ways! Yeah, NZ - while it does get snow further south - is not really used to major dumpings of it in most places, so it can totally shut things down.

Wellington has more issues than many as it's also a major sea crossing from the North island to the South Island (4 hours by ferry) and the sea there can get really choppy as it's open ocean on each side of the country, so when the ferries stop, and then flights too, it can really stymy things majorly.

The walking will be great when we can do it consistently! Yesterday morning was beautiful but by hometime it was pouring down, the wind was up and it was freezing cold! Luckily one of our work colleagues lives nearby and he was able to give us a ride home, because I really did not fancy either the walk from the train or the walk from the bus in that!!!

Agreed! It gets cold here, for us, but we almost never get below freezing either. I'm quite happy with that.

Oh holy moly, rain isn't even something that occurred to me when you mentioned walking - I'm glad that your coworker could give you both a lift so you didn't float away!

I used to have a commute like that - @15 minute walk on either end. Yep, the weather can be a pain - but as I recall I kind of adapted and packed dry socks and it worked out. And a walk is a wonderful thing. :)

So glad you're over your move and can enjoy settling in.

You're all in the icebox, and here it's boiling outside - 33.8 degrees Celsius plus 82% humidity equals....gross! But it's supposed to break soon, so.... summer in NYC, at least it's short. ;)

Sorry for the late answer!

Yes, I just need to be more enthusiastic about it, I guess! I find exercise harder and harder as I get older (no excuse, but true!) and would rather not be out in the cold rain. As it's now only a ten minute drive to work, it's certainly hard to resist using the car as it has rained most days since we moved in! We've decided though, that as the weather warms up and we get less rain, we'll do it more, so we're not sweating the fact that we haven't done it as much as we should have so far.

I know, it's hard to grasp that someone can be cold while you'[re hot and vice versa, isn't it? I do not envy you the humidity, I'll say that, but I can't wait till it's a little warmer here! Not that we get really cold weather in Auckland, but that doesn't stop me disliking winter!!!

Today the sun is out and it's not too cold though, so here's hoping it'll be good for a while now and that the rain is out of the way for the rest of the month at least!!! ;-)
