Thinking about the events of this past GNEW has got me thinking. I've always told those close to me that I don't like to be surprised with things - I have *awful* stage fright and the shock just negates any joy of the award. I really think it should depend on the person and the award. Major awards should usually be less than secretive, while some of the spur-of-the-moment awards might be better off without the recipient knowing. Plus, some people like secrets and some don't.

I think something awarded at the whim of the Crown need not be discussed outside the heralds and scribes. Inducting someone into a polling order should be with the recipient's knowledge (and consent).

I'm going to be very interested in seeing how this comes out. Personally, surprise awards are a huge peeve of mine. I think they do way more harm than good ( ... )
