First day at the café was today. I was pretty much given an introduction to the work (pricing, ordering, inventory and so forth). The hard part's not the work, it's being around people. Still, it's a sheltered work environment, and that's good ( Read more... )

Working at the Chinese takeaway is good that way. There's only three permanent workers, only one of whom speaks conversational English, and another delivery driver, while the interactions with the customers mostly follow a script: e.g. knock on the door, "Good evening! That will be £10.50, please." Count out change, say goodnight, and away; the interactions with the Chinese customers are even more formulaic.

Occasionally you get a customer who has been inexact about their address, or it's a busy night and you can't quite make it in the alloted time, and they're a bit cross, and all I can do is apologise and suggest that they complain to the manager. Worst is if they say the food is cold and refuse to accept it. But I console myself with the thought that I probably won't have to deal with them again.
