That was a very interesting bit of ed history. At least 30 yrs ago, some of our schools were still following that 'tradition'. It was a rap on the knuckles with a ruler, or one swat on the behind with a paddle for the more serious transgressions.

But probably 30 to 40 years ago was when schools started 'logical consequences', which in this day and age, might also be considered abuse, but I don't know, since I no longer teach or have kids in school.

Example of a logical consequence: You scribble on the wall of the school, you spend recess or after school scrubbing the wall to clean it off.
