Fence

"They call 'im the Tonomancer on the streets."

"'Tonomancer?' What's that mean?"

The car's automatic wipers were loud on the windshield as rain pelted the top of the old car as they drove to into the neglected ghetto of Tokyo IV.

"'File says its a play on some old science fiction novel from the twentieth century." Papers shuffled as he looked through the folder he'd been given when he was assigned to the case. He looked over at his blonde partner behind the steering wheel.

"Ah, this, 'Neuromancer?' Gibson, William, 1984..."

"Yeah, at's the one."

"Hm..."

"Hey, Teru," the driver glanced over at him when they pulled up to a stoplight. "You really gonna be okay with this?"

"Yeah, I'm cool. I've gone undercover before."

"Not like this, man," he pressed the gas pedal when the light changed. "This ain't like in narcotics."

"Yeah, I know. I can handle it, Jiro."

"No, you don't get it, man. This guy ain't normal. 'S something... off about him." Jiro waved a hand next to his head vaguely.

"How so? Is he using? Heroine? Techs?"

"No, no, nothin' like that. He's just weird, man."

"I'm afraid that doesn't tell me much, Jiro."

"Look," the blond explained as they pulled up to the curb of a weathered warehouse, old gray paint peeling off its tin roof and concrete walls. "You'll see what I mean when you meet 'im."

"This is the place?"

"Yep." Jiro pressed a button to open the door for Teru. "Good luck! Backup's just a phone call away!" Jiro tapped the wire in his ear and Teru smirked.

"Sure. I'll call you for a pickup."

Jiro drove off and Teru looked up at the building. Three large roll-up doors occupied the wall and looked rusted into place from years of not moving. He walked around the building to a small door in the alley that had a dim light bulb flickering beside it tiredly, the protective glass globe mostly broken away. He was surprised to find the door unlocked, opening easily with a twist of the knob but the gun barrel that stared him down just inside was no shock.

"Easy now," Teru smiled, tone calm. He raised his hands, palms-out, and felt a pair of hands pat him down. He was declared clear and the grimy gun motioned him further into the dark warehouse.

"What's yer business?"
"I got a message to meet the Tonomancer-"

Again the gun was in his face, wavering dangerously close to his nose, then pressed against his cheek. It was a very big gun and smelled of grease.

"Who sent ya?"

"No one," Teru fought to keep the charming smile on his face as the gun dug into his flesh. "Like I said, I got a message to come here and see him."

"Where's it?"
The gun nudged him again and he winced but reached slowly for his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small transmitter and handed it over to the figure who had searched him. He could barely make out the woman's features in the glow of the small screen as she played back the message.

"It's legit," was all she said. The gun moved away from his face seconds later and the woman pushed him forward.

The hot goods were stored in the back of the warehouse. Teru looked over the boxes, categorizing the electronics in his mind as they passed. Everything from simple televisions and childrens' game consoles to sophisticated looking VR equipment and hardware he could not identify were stacked there. A corner of the space was occupied by two banks of computer systems. LEDs and monitors blinked coldly in the darkness, lighting the faces of several young men, blood-shot eyes not wavering from their marathon flickering across the screens as he passed.

"Go up the stairs."
Teru nodded to the woman and walked up the metal staircase she indicated. It rattled loudly and shook, bolts securing it to the wall loose. He held onto the railing tightly. He stopped on the landing at the top of the stairs and let the woman step around him. She knocked on the door loudly.

"Tony, visitor." When no response came through the door she scowled and knocked again. "Tony!"

"I'm busy."
Teru almost didn't hear the soft response, but the woman huffed and rolled her eyes. He could just see the gesture before she pushed the door open.

"I said, I'm busy, woman. Don't you listen?"

"And I said you had a visitor." She emphasized the word and waved the little communicator at the young man Teru assumed was 'Tonomancer.'

"Feh," he beckoned them in, hand covered in a thick glove with a multitude of thin wires hanging down from it. Teru made a face as he entered. The room was small, had only one window with blinds drawn closed over it. There was a stale smell to the air and the clutter of paper and electronics everywhere. A low couch near the massive computer station showed signs of serving as a bed with a lumpy-looking pillow and rumpled blanket shoved to one end.

In the middle of the room Tony was hooked up from head to toe in VR gear. His head was covered by a gleaming visor large enough that it obscured his entire face. Wires hung down around his neck tangled in strands of black hair and a silver necklace with an obscure pendant dangling against his chest. He was rather unimpressive as far as underground crime lords went, dressed in ratty jeans and a t shirt with some character on it Teru did not recognize. The young man flipped the visor up and scowled at the woman, his eyes dark in the low light.

"How many times do I have to tell yo-" His expression changed, eyes wide when she flashed the comm at him again. He snatched it out of her hands and checked it over.

"It's for real, Tony. It's ours."

"I can see that," he snapped, not content until he pried the object open and picked out a certain chip that identified the device as his. He put it down on his desk and took the helmet off.
"You found your way to me, I'm surprised."

Teru nodded as the woman bowed out, closing the door and leaving him alone with the smaller man.
"Yeah..."

"Still. You didn't have to interrupt my game." He sat down and pulled the controls off his body. "Have a seat," he gestured to the empty air in front of his desk. The only other place to sit was the futon across the room. Teru didn't think he meant that so he sat on the floor and looked up. Tony smiled. "Amusing. Do you know why you're here?"

"I got the message that you needed help moving some cargo. Gotta say, I was flattered that you thought highly enough of me to call." The young man's smile grew.

"Before you go any further, I know you're a cop."
Teru's blood ran cold but his face betrayed nothing, expression calm, a little confused.
"And I know your blond partner is out there waiting. All I ask is that you have enough respect for me to not lie about that. Afterall, I'm not lying to you."

"Oh?"

"Far from it." He picked up a cellophane bag of candy from his desk and popped a piece in his mouth. He offered it to Teru, who shook his head. Tony dropped the bag and got up from behind the desk. He crouched in front of Teru, eyes bright even in the low light, smelling faintly of peppermint. "I'm telling you the truth."

"If I'm not here to move hot electronics for you, then why am I here?"

"You're here to help me move something, but not electronics."

"What, then? Just know that I've already seen enough in this place to put you away for at least fifty years."

"I've been locked up my whole life."

"What?"

"This place. I'm sick of being locked up here. We all are. That's why I called you here. You can help us get out." This must have been what Jiro meant when he said the young man was 'a little off.'

"I'm afraid I'm not following you."

"You're not listening." He reached out, grabbed Teru and kissed him, tongue pushing into his mouth, tasting of peppermint. Teru pushed him away but not before the candy was shoved into his mouth. He coughed and swallowed it by accident, scowling.

"The hell was that for?"

"You'll see." Tony smiled, the expression a little apologetic. Teru's vision began to blur and he toppled backward.

"Wh-wha..?"

"It's okay. It'll make more sense when you wake up, I promise." Tony pulled him up off the floor and dragged him over to the futon. He put the VR visor on Teru's head and started hooking him up to the game.

"What are you... doing...?" He could not see anything now. Tony began switching on this equipment and lights inside the helmet blinded him. The last thing he heard before he passed out was Tony whispering to him.

"Say hello to me on the other side, Tekko."
