I just...augh. I try, I really do, to see where people are coming from. I disagree with the whole "sanctity of marriage" bit, but I can kind of see why people would think that way--it's WRONG and illogical and based off of fear of the unknown, but at least I can imagine where they're coming from.

But this is just, like, BLATANT VIOLATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS. Why? Why is it necessary to tear up the lives of perfectly decent citizens who happened to experience love differently than the majority? These people lived their whole lives together to end them with this? WHAT THE HELL.

Actually, this is a trend that happens to couples of any marital status; similar things have happened to two heterosexual couples that I know of.

All elderly people, regardless of marital status, should be treated with dignity and respect, and not like the property of the state.

I totally agree with that statement, except remove the word elderly, be ALL PEOPLE DESERVE DIGNITY AND RESPECT WTF SONOMA COUNTY.

Oh yeah, totally. I was just pointing out that for some reason, elderly people are considered sub-human and therefore, less important than others.

The ineptness of local, state, and federal government is not a surprise, but I still find myself disappointed when they fuck up.

Don't know CopperBadge but have read the story and signed the petition.

Apparently some of the people commenting at the linked-in story site have now forwarded the story to Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann... Would LOVE to see this get national attention.

The story says that Howard DIED in the nursing home, separated from Clay, who was finally able to get free of the facility where HE had been involuntarily confined and is now suing the county agencies involved. I hope he takes those hateful scumbags for everything they've got, and if his lawyers are particularly on the ball, maybe they can get whoever did this charged with malfeasance, theft/extortion, and with luck add a hate crimes charge ('cause SOMEONE obviously had it in for the poor guys for being "queer").
