[SCA] U. Carolingia lectures what I have taught

May 01, 2013 20:57

So, a while ago I compiled a list of SCA classes what I had taught. (Ooh, look, that was three years ago-how time flies.) At the time I explicitly did not go back to lectures at the University of Carolingia, but in the years since I have made a stab at compiling a list ( Read more... )

Rhetoric: Well, gawrsh, glad you liked it. Still not remembering-can you remind me of any details?

Trivium and quadrivium: Right, I've served a turn or two as rector, and so I must have done the general Introduction. Worth a mention.

We've been watching the "History" channel's series The Vikings (we record them, then watch them later with a degree of fast-forwarding). I've been wondering whether you'd have any instructive remarks. I don't know that it would be enough for a whole lecture, but possibly. I have opinions about the clothing (as is usually the case with historical dramas, clothing for the lead female characters is totally wrong, while generic background folks are at least plausible) and we've looked up some history, but remain in ignorance. We think we saw stirrups, and were perturbed, but that isn't the biggest problem. The time is 793+ .

I've only seen one episode so far, of which I remember three details: the extreme amount of mascara on the women, the funeral straight out of ibn Fadlan (which was moderately faithful to the book, except that was set at the far end of the Viking world), and the textbook use of Chekhov's Snake Pit-foreshadowing, the mark of quality saga-writing! Which I guess adds up to: they're making some efforts to include authentic story elements, but I won't vouch for the costuming.

But B follows the series, so I make catch more of it from time to time. Any strong reactions, pro or con, will get posted here.

I have your notes for a grail class you taught. Would you like me to send them back to you? :)

The grail class was one of the ones on the list from three years ago, classes taught at typical SCA class venues (scholas, wars, East Kingdom Universities, etc.); usually last an hour each, have handouts, on whatever topic of history of the MIddle Ages interested me at the time. This list is from the University of Carolingia, our once-upon-a-time annual event of lectures, delivered more or less in academic persona, usually something like 15 to 20 minutes long, on subjects from the mediæval university disciplines of the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric), quadrivium (arithmetic, music, astronomy, and geometry), and the graduate studies (law, canon law, theology, medicine, and philosophy).

I have my notes on the Grail safe, so you can keep your copy. But thanks for the helpful offer :-)

I only attended U. of Carolingia the most recent time it was in session, but I remember enjoying your lecture on The Papal Schism or, as I remember it, "We Have Three Popes. Now What?" : )

I remember perfectly well that you attended, and I enjoyed your lecture as well. (Of which, I especially remember some cutting asides about Catullus.)
