I'm really worried about Róisín. She's always done this thing where she goes back and forth between being ok and being insanely timid and shy. Lately she's swung into a shy period that's lasting longer and much worse than usual. I discovered the other day that she's been using under the couch as her own private toilet. With the kits growing older, could it be that a new pecking order is being established? Or perhaps she's picking up on your anxiety about having to find a new place. Anyhoo, I hope whatever it is clears up sooner rather than later.

Either one is possible I suppose. I haven't seen any dominance struggles involving Róisín but they could be happening while I'm at work or asleep. Or since she's pretty much on the bottom of the totem pole, she could be hiding in *anticipation* of dominance struggles to come. Or she could be picking up on my anxiety in general -- the possibility of moving, surgery, pain, insomnia, etc.

I'm going to go get some plastic sheeting and put it down underneath the couch, since there's no way I can really *stop* her from going under there, I just need to make sure she does as little damage as possible. And then I guess all I can do is lavish her with affection when she does come out, and sit back, and wait. And hope whatever is bothering her resolves itself soon.

I had an unsocialized cat who had similar problems. Small, dark places made her feel secure. You might try creating a small, dark place that is big enough for a small litter box and see if she'd be willing to hide there instead of under the couch.
