I am doing chores at the island that I don't necessarily do every year, so I am noting them here where I can find them again ( Read more... )

It's definitely the time for spring cleaning! And I like your idea of doing it in sections and then doing something fun. :) I have been spraying off the deck every other day here as the pollen gets so bad. It feels good to have everything fresh and clean.

I washed and ironed and rehung the valances in the dining room and kitchen.

The curtains were sewn by me and it was nice to see how well they wash. The sewing itself has no particular skill, but the quality of the fabric and lining is much better than I could have bought.

I didn't do the curtains in the downstairs bedroom or bathroom or the upstairs bedrooms, so that's for the future. I think I have washed the bunkroom curtains recently, though, so the ocean room ones are next.

I washed all the pillow case liners for the upstairs queen and double beds. I checked the pillows for those six and they were fine.

I did not wash bedspreads for anything, but washed the mattress pad covers and the blankets for the Queen and double upstairs.

Really really dumb question, if you dont mind: What does the baking soda/ lavender concoction do?

Also, how often do you flip your mattresses?

The baking soda/lavendar concoction probably doesn't do anything terribly necessary since I use a mattress pad. But the idea is to clean and deoderize the mattress. I mix three cups of baking soda with 30 drops of lavendar oil and sprinkle it over the mattress with a sieve and then rub it in a bit and let it sit. Then I vacuum it off. The idea is that it'll kill any bedbug eggs (which I've never encountered and hope never to see) and by laying down a powder I can be really sure I've vacuumed the entire mattress.

The newer mattresses we buy these days aren't flippable: only one side has padding. So we just rotate them. I rotate whenever I wash the mattress pad liner, which probably works out to once a year for the vacation home and maybe three times a year at home.
