I guess it's odd, but water shortages just don't come to mind around here. I do shut the dishwasher off most times when it hits the dry cycle and just let it air dry, and it has an "energy saver" feature, too, because saving energy was a big deal in the late 70's, too. :-)

But I expect you're right that it doesn't save water.

The thing is, it's one of those old kitchenaids that is really high quality ceramic interior and has a matching panel that goes with the cupboards in front and the motor runs great and it has a cleanable filter. The only thing wrong was that one of the tubes to the top tray had gotten so old it was disintegrating. We just replaced the rubber tube.

It's really hard to come up with a rationale to replace it until something not-fixable breaks.

You really don't think about water shortage?

Isn't the 70s style "energy saver" feature simply the ability to cancel the drying cycle? And doesn't the heated water come from your hot water heater rather than the dishwasher itself? I love the old style appliances too, but the dishwashers are so terribly inefficient you save both energy, water AND money in the long-run by replacing it.

Or do you mainly just like the matching panel? I'm confused.

We really have no water shortages here. We've got so low a water table that when I dug a three foot deep hole it filled in and created my muddy gash. I live within a mile of the Connecticut River and there are three or four fairly significant rivers that flow into it in this area. We are in a mountain stream runoff area, to boot. That's partly why it's so agricultural here: we not only have frequent floods (making the area a bad choice for buildings) but we also have very fertile soil with plenty of water. We're the place that bottling companies come to ask to dip into our aquafers. (We said no ( ... )

This is a charming story of a day, which I'm glad you shared.

P.S. Whatever anyone says, there's nothing wrong with keeping your 30-year-old dishwasher. It's somewhere in the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. :)

Well, no, I don't agree that I have a human right to my dishwasher. :-)

But I don't mind being pushed to consider something critically that I hadn't been thinking about.
