Oh, ick

Jul 11, 2010 09:21

I just got one of those emails my parents send me about the latest cause they are supporting by forwarding emails with lots of big red fonts.

They want to boycott the Eid stamp, even though it's pretty and you might innocently buy it, because it's actually a MUSLIM stamp that Obama wants (guess why) and it's horrific that a religion that hates us ( Read more... )

never forget, intellectual liberal, people are stupid, aging parents

If there's a Snopes that addresses the issue, that's what I send back. Otherwise I ignore it when my family sends me that shit. There is no response that won't upset them, and telling them my opinion rarely has any positive effect.

I sent it back to a friend who had sent me the anti-Eid stamp email, and ended up giving up when she sent back a diatribe about the evils of Islam. I realized I couldn't help her understand it wasn't the religion, but select people who practice it who are evil...

My great aunt forwards me anti-immigration rants all of the time (which is ironic, considering that she is a child of immigrants). I have yet to figure out a delicate way to ask her to stop.

I can't imagine having a problem w/ an Eid stamp. How's it any different than a Christmas stamp?

I do the Snopes link send-backs too. If that's not possible I just click delete as fast as I possibly can.

This post serves as a great reminder to me that I *am* making the right decision when I decide not to spam people with emails about causes I care about.

ETA: I realise Christmas and Eid are not the same thing; what I meant is that I see no difference between having a stamp celebrating one holiday v. another. Regardless of the meanings of the holidays.

I've responded with a thoughtful, well-reasoned reply to the political forwards that I've found most offensive, with just the immediate family copied. I then followed up in person to let my parents know that in the future, I might just respond to everyone included in the forward.

Now, I receive no more of those upsetting forwards from my parents.
