Nah, I've gained ten pounds since this time last year. It had a lot to do with changing my diet to being more of a localvore. It turns out that living all winter on root cellared veggies and hunks of local meat (often in the form of sausage, because, well, that's what there's a lot of) is turning me into Aunt Bea.
I thought one drink a day was good for you. Not the case when there're potential high blood pressure issues? Man, my blood pressure goes DOWN when I have a drink. I can FEEL it!
In any case, I think I'll make an attempt to exercise to reduce my blood pressure. Perhaps that's the impetus I need to get back into a routine.
I keep thinking it'd be stupid to go do a dead-lifting routine when I have sod to break for a new garden patch. Except I've really only dug one new patch this month. And I think I'm exercising when I'm just working like a dog at things like food prep. I need to make this more formal again.
The foods are not untasty, just restrictive. The primary function of the DASH diet is to reduce sodium intake and fat intake and minimize calories. It is more of a pain in the ass then anything. You can eat what every you want as long as it falls within the guide lines, of course eating a quarter of Big Mac, and that is all you can eat for the day is sort of a bummer. And it does seem to work
I tried to cut down to one drink every other day, and it wasn't bad. It felt good, actually. I didn't do it on the instruction of a doctor, but it seems that 3-4 drinks/week is a good amount for women (breast cancer, etc.). Now that I have to abstain entirely I cannot IMAGINE voluntarily going without alcohol for one day!
I'm a proponent of a drink a day. The thing is, generally speaking, once I've had my daily drink I find the notion of a second daily drink really attractive, and then, well, the cork's out, and those wine pumps really don't do a damn thing for bourbon.
All that? Not so good for my weight. It's easier to control that when I *gasp* don't drink like a fish.
