So I'm a bitch, but when she hadn't shown up by 9:10 on Tuesday I'd have called her to find out where the hell she was, and if she hadn't shown up promptly after that (ie, by 9:30 on Tuesday AND stayed late to compensate), I'd have told her thanks but no thanks.
(Around here, people also would have blocked her on NextDoor and made a post slamming her unreliability, but that's not my style.)
My options were 4 hours or no hours. Getting what I actually wanted wasn't one of the options.
This week I had no clients so I could work on my business. My admin assistant was scheduled to be here, so was my para-planner, and we had som Big Shit to get done.
The admin assistant called out sick at 8:30 for her 9 AM arrival time. For the whole week. Well, she managed to come in for 3 hours on Friday afternoon, but, shit. I feel kicked in the teeth by workers on a regular basis.
Bad help is worse than no help. Settling for bad help for at least ten years is why you are still unable to find decent help.
Like, I know from reading this that I could get hired by you to work 20 hours a week, begin flaking off almost immediately, even during tax season, and you wouldn't tell me to take a hike; on the contrary, you'd be grateful for the scraps. (As a worker, this gives me no incentive to show up on time or complete the agreed-upon tasks quickly or correctly. Maybe a future employer will expect more from me.)
So before your step 5 of job offer, I'd add in a reference check. Even a simple confirmation of their previous job and whether you'd rehire the person or not is very helpful.
Oh, good point. I consider that part of the screen. We check the references they give, but I also add an extra level: I check on Facebook to see if we know anyone in common and then I call whoever we know in common to see what they have to say, especially if it's a client or former client (then I ask if they'd be uncomfortable having that person be able to see their finances.)
