“Or, the flip side, we want to encourage more of something we caught them doing good, which is a back-handed compliment. ("Thanks so much for being at work on time today!")”

Positive feedback frequently comes across this way.

But it is not only a backhanded complement. “Thank
you so much for handling your supervisor’s duties while she has been out for treatment. You did an excellent job.” is a lot different than “thank you so much for being at work on time today”
