Writer's Block: My Biggest Environmental Pet Peeve

Littering is way up there but since i work at the grocery store i think what i hate most is exessive use of plastic bags and paper bags. I love when people bring in their reusable bags but i would say just  for as many people who bring their own I also have that many with rediculous bagging requests. They want their milk in a bag, or their lettuce ( Read more... )

I always worry that the baggers are annoyed at me for bringing my own bag, and throwing off their routine.

Some people don’t like to bag in them but i think they are a lot easier to pack effectively. I know they are certainly easier to get in the house after shopping and then more like things can be packed together to save put away time. I always like to unpack the cold stuff first when I get home and then take a minute to relax before I put away the rest of the groceries.

I was wondering about litter the other day. I read somewhere that there are people trying to get others to compost. Their thing is that a lot of garbage is compostable, and some companies make compostable platic-like things, but if it is still just getting put in a landfill, those compostable qualities aren't getting taken advantage of. It is littering to just toss your apple core on the ground, but it will at least get eaten by insects and degrade and all. But the non-littering alternative to this is usually to put your apple core in the trash bin, where it won't degrade. Of course, if everyone composted (and I don't, mostly because I still live with my parents), littering would not be the most eco-friendly choice for that apple core, but in the present state of affairs, maybe some litter is better as litter ( ... )

i dont concider a well placed apple core litter, like an apple core thrown into thick woods, that is a good place for it. I like to leave my peels under bushes when i am at work, the stuff gets eaten in a few days anyway right?
