Duo watched closely as Trowa's face changed from its normal color to a weirder shade of pink. This was definitely not good. When Trowa's hand came up to wildly flail before his face, the green eyes widening with horror, Duo leaned away biting his tongue. Definitely not good.

He looked over at Heero who was sprawled on the ground next to his chair. While Heero seemed to be slowly recovering, Trowa was still in the first stage of - poisoning? He offered Heero a hand, but the other man shook his head faintly, a hand splayed on his still heaving chest.

At the horrifying sound beside him, Duo's head jerked back to Trowa who was now emitting raspy, croaky, almost guttural sounds. Like a woman training with the Lamaze method, his mind supplied, feebly trying to humor him up. His brows furrowed, the wrinkles on his forehead shifting together like continental shelves.

Duo gulped. With a strained smile, he shoved a glass of water across the table, to help with the severe burns Trowa had to be suffering. It couldn't be poison, he reminded himself. Still, the liquid seemed to burn an acidic trail down Trowa's gullet, because the tall man was now clawing at his throat, desperate for some air.

It was poison.

A loud thud in the hallway made him jerk around, only to find WuFei sagging against the wall. Just as his friend wanted to speak - maybe to dictate his last will, a coughing fit wracked the Chinese man's body and Duo winced in shared pain. He turned, finding himself unable to look at the sad figure of his friend any longer. This was torture, a way to kill them quietly, a way to silence them forever. And soon, it would be his turn. He blanched at the thought.

Duo cringed, knowing it was their own fault for nagging so much. For sometimes ridiculing what had been set before them, but never had one of them thought that something like this could happen. He saw Trowa slump over and felt his eyes water. No, please… An eerily cheerful whistle came from the doorway of the kitchen, and Duo turned, determined to go down on his knees, to beg, to ask for forgiveness, to offer his services in anyway he could…

But Quatre would have nothing of it. Duo saw the blond man advance, a spoon in his hand. A red liquid dripped to the floor, and Duo could almost hear a quiet sizzle, as the acid burned through the wooden floorboards. He swallowed again, his eyes watering as the substance swimming in the spoon came closer and closer to his face.

Trowa seemed to undertake one last attempt to save him - either that, or gravity had finally pulled him down; Duo couldn't look away long enough to confirm his best friend's intentions. He gave Quatre a last pleading look, but the blond just smiled and stretched out his hand.

"Cheer up, Duo; it's just chili!"
