Random Bits and Pieces with Photos

It has been a very strange gardening year. Of course, there was the terrible drought and heat that killed lots of things, including established trees. Kate and I gave up watering the vegetable garden in August. Since the heat broke in October, we've gotten some rain. Not enough to officially break the drought, but enough to do weird things to ( Read more... )

We haven't seen them in the yard in weeks. We hope they are still coming at night, though. But, you must come visit sometime soon, anyway!

Nice!

That broccoli looks like good stuff. I am growing curly kale again - it seems to be a hardy regular supply of green vegetable I can count on; and then in the summer if I let it seed it produces loveley yellow flowers which the insects adore.

Curly kale... I'm not familiar with that. It's a cool season vegetable, I assume?

Yes, it's a European leafy vegetable. It tastes nicer after a frost (same goes for brussel sprouts; someone told me that this is because a frost encourages the sap to head beack down into the base of the plant - I don't know if this is true but it sounds plausible). We had -17C nights last year and snow, and it thrived.

It was extremely popular is the Middle Ages, and also during WW2 when the population were encouraged to grow it because of rationing. I do like to know that I can pop out into the garden and have green leafy stuff any time I want.

Hmmmmmm, I would like that, too. I know some of the food coops around here have kale. I will investigate...

Wonderful sign and deer.

While I was at home, my brother's tomato plant had decided to cover itself in small tomatoes. My sister's pepper plant did the same thing. No veggies all summer, and then here in the fall, they are trying to wedge in a growing season. Your broccoli is right at home I suppose.

You will be so much easier to find now with a rainbow dog on the fence. :-)

I have heard other people have had a very late season growing spurt with their plants, so perhaps you are right.

I love the sign. It makes me smile whenever I arrive home.
