Random Bits and Pieces with Photos

It has been a very strange gardening year. Of course, there was the terrible drought and heat that killed lots of things, including established trees. Kate and I gave up watering the vegetable garden in August. Since the heat broke in October, we've gotten some rain. Not enough to officially break the drought, but enough to do weird things to plants during a mild fall. Several of my spring bulbs came back up in late September, including all of my delicate irises and day lilies (which had died back in July). Right now, almost December, I have honeysuckle on the fence blooming. I have one pot of begonias which are still blooming on my back patio.

And I picked this from the garden this afternoon:

This is a seriously hardy broccoli plant. I planted it from seed in my Master Gardening class, and it survived storms in spring (tornadoes and hail), drought in summer (two months of 100+ degree temperatures with no rain), and now frost and freezing temperatures. I keep expecting it to die, and tonight's hard freeze might finally finish it off. But, yum, tasty vegetables from the garden after Thanksgiving. I certainly was not expecting that.

Also, I wanted to share pictures of my 12th anniversary gift from Kate. Mind you, our anniversary was back in August, but I'm just now getting around to posting the pictures.

It's on the front fence, at the entrance to our driveway.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that we had a few deer visiting our yard this fall. Here is pic of two of them eating corn:

The picture is a bit blurry because I took it through a dirty window.

I saw them (youngsters and their mother) yesterday during my evening walk with Sarah. They fawns are all grown up now, and they've lost their spots. But Mom seemed to recognize me and the dog, coming a few steps towards us when she saw us, rather than running away. That's kind of cool, in a way, but dangerous for her. People around here will shoot a deer in their yard, so it would be best if she remained fearful of humans and dogs.

Chickens love sweet potato fries. (When I said random in the subject heading, I meant it...)

I had my truck back from on loan for all of week before I loaned it out again (this time, to my brother).

Rabbit has ventured out as far as the kitchen, but she's still afraid of our smallest kitty, Tasha (called The Erm).

I actually had energy today... which is so weird I almost don't know what to do with it.
