Hot Days in Chicken World

Aug 06, 2011 10:01

The heat has been scorching (really), and the chickens are having a miserable time with it.  Yesterday I went out a little after noon, and poor Xena was huddled, panting, in the hen house on top of a pan in which we put ice at night to cool them off. You could almost hear her thoughts: "It's cold at night, why isn't it cold now? OMG I'm hot ( Read more... )

I'm dead-set against feeding or otherwise encouraging stray cats, but when you see a little kitten actually panting in the heat, it's the hardest of hearts that won't put out a little water for them. I've only seen a cat panting once before.

This HEAT. I can't believe how excited I got when I saw the seven-day forecast with highs of 97 and 98 next week. Wednesday and Thursday, c'mon!!

Just miserable. So hoping the heat breaks for you guys soon.

I wonder if the chickens would benefit from a box fan blowing across a pan of water?

Yeah, my grandmother keeps a couple of water basins full for the wild animals by her house. The heat has meant that she has a very regular stream of Momma deer & their babies, coyotes, etc., and several hawks and owls that come to just stand in the water for up to 30 minutes at a time. I'll have to suggest the ice idea to her!

I noticed last week, when we took the niece to the park, they have a wading pool there and we dipped our feet in, you just cool right off if you can just get your feet in cool water.

I feel for out little squirrel, little begger is lying in one of the houseplants, cause i think it's cooler in there in dirt that's been shaded all day than places that have been in the sun.

all you can do is keep the birdbaths full and free of mosquitos
