looking for the new in "new year" ... something really really new ... vanity fair recently ran an article illustrating how music, fashion, design has been in kind of a standstill since the 90s ... what a wake-up call ... I concur.
I think what you say of fashion is true for mainstream (and even underground) fashion, but I have seen some people in the under-underground redefining even what is meant by clothing, much less fashion. Some of that may well bubble up to more general consciousness in the next decade, just like Commes des Garcon exploded in the 80s, even though it was using trends begun in the 60s
