new year next

looking for the new in "new year" ... something really really new ... vanity fair recently ran an article illustrating how music, fashion, design has been in kind of a standstill since the 90s ... what a wake-up call ... I concur.

I think what you say of fashion is true for mainstream (and even underground) fashion, but I have seen some people in the under-underground redefining even what is meant by clothing, much less fashion. Some of that may well bubble up to more general consciousness in the next decade, just like Commes des Garcon exploded in the 80s, even though it was using trends begun in the 60s.

I think you are quite right for music - there is nothing redefining out there like rap, metal, punk and world music have been. However, I really don't see that as a bad thing right now.It seems to me that right now the music industry itself is redefining itself, and we won't really see new forms until that has had a few years to synthesize. Let's also hope that America's "Idle" finally dies, and stops vomiting the worst of unimaginative music puke on the world.

However, I have to disagree with you on design. I think classic forms of design are a bit stagnant, but new forms, especially interactive, are blazing new trails. I am excited at some of the new designs seen in some ebooks, apps, games and so on. What is happening in these spaces now will redefine design in a substantial way. Check out indiegames in particular for some cool applications of design.

Still, I always look forward to what new designs you generate!
