I have three godparents, two godfathers (my mom's cousins) and a godmother (my dad's sister). I am very close with two of them and fairly close with the third, and I think one of the gifts they gave me was a clear view of adult lives very different from my parents'. Neither of my godfathers has to this point married, and none of the three have children. My godmother is an artist who lives in the North Woods with her carpenter/mathematician husband, my godfather is a sys admin in LA, and my other godfather is a corporate VP in Napa Valley. Three lifestyles very different from each other and from my parents, three very different sets of priorities--all close to me and all loved. I'm hoping that as a godmother I am more a source of interesting questions than a source of definitive answers. Sounds like that's where you're going with your goddaughter, too.
