The poop is taking over!

Hello fellow pig people! I think I need your help. After finding this community recently and reading through all of the tags and memories, I decided to try the fleece method. My 2 pigs love it; the minute I put the fleece in they were popcorning all over the place. They're snuggling in it and having a great time, and I'm happy to ditch the annoying ( Read more... )

I tried the fleece with towels underneath for awhile, and it became soooo much work. I would take the pigs out of the cage and vacuum the poop with one of those small dirt devil things. I couldnt handle all the work though so I switched back.

I just vacuum the pellets once a week, with 2 boars making them. It's not that bad.

My boars must be poo machines or something. If I skipped a day on pellet-cleaning, I think you wouldn't be able to see the fleece.

Sometimes I think Ahab is incontinent. He drops pellets at anything: picking him up, putting him down, giving them hay, opening a door, closing a door. I feel a fool when I go to pick him up sometimes & have to sort of lightly "spank" him to get him to drop the 3 or 4 pellets he's got glistening at the ready. Honestly, I think if I held him ass-first at a mugger & just scared him a lot, I could mow my assailant down with a hail of shit bullets.

I got this really bitchin' Dirt Devil vacuum a few months ago in an attempt to properly clean the cage since I was determined to switch to fleece once and for all. SO. FRIGGIN'. GOOD. It's got an attachable hose and a thing you can put on the end that sucks up more hair and poop. I try to do it every two days or so, but sometimes I'm too busy. :\ That said, here's my procedure for getting the poop out:
1. Remove pigs and put them in a large cuddle cup type thing (a dog bed that I got for cuddling them without getting hair all over me, since that got to be a real problem)
2. Remove pigloos
3. VACUUM, HELL YEAH
4. Put pigs and pigloos back in
5. Watch them excitedly run around like it's a brand new area

Basically, the pigs will have to suck it up a little bit with the vacuum, but OMG, get a really good vacuum. I could never do fleece before because the poop would get out of control and the vacuum I had couldn't suck their poop up to save its life, but now I've been doing fleece for 2+ months and it's sooo much better than bedding. :D

The hay thing could be a possibility. I give them hay every day, but it's not available 24/7. I'll add a hay rack and see if that helps. Thanks!

Be careful, some of the store bought hay racks strangle guinea pigs.

A cheap and free hay rack is a Kleenex box (remove plastic wrappers first)!

my pigs hated when i began vacuuming, but they actually got used to it quite quickly after they learned i give them food after. bigwig will munch on hay when i use my dirt devil.

also, instead of sweeping, i found using a small kitty litter scooper with ultra fine holes (i took one away from my cat) works better than a dustpan.
