(After Jo, Three and Koschei have met and separated - for Three and Koschei and/or anyone else who wants to join in)Jo had spent an interesting, not to mention educational time talking to the locals. Despite everything that was going on, there were always people wanting to gossip, or just wanting to tell their story and be believed. Listening was ( Read more... )

The Master spotted her as he walked along alone. He'd been exploring the dusty human colony and had come to some conclusions, but he was keeping them to himself for now. The woman on the bench could only be one of their fellow conscriptees. He sauntered over.

"Taking a little rest?" he supposed.

"It could be anything," Jo said, thinking back to the things she'd seen at UNIT. "It could be a teleporter or they're being made invisible. We won't know until we look, but I'm not going down there on my own," she added to the Master.

"Oh, Doctor, you're not thinking sinister enough," the Master tsked. "Someone is doing something to them. You don't need to look for the people in the mine. You need to look for the puppet master and he will not be in the mine."

The Doctor looked between Jo and the Master, mixing their ideas in his mind with his own. "Then where exactly do you suggest?" he asked the Master. "There aren't a lot of places about where someone might hide, unless they're deep within the bushland somewhere, in which chase we're going to need some kind of tracker system, which we can't get until we've some idea of what we're dealing with."

Jo wasn't certain there was a puppet master, but then if there was anyone who would know about this sort of thing it was the Master. It wasn't that dissimilar from something he'd do. As yet, though, they hadn't found out why anyone would be doing such a thing. "If it was you," she asked the Master, "where would you hide?"

"They have advanced technology, clearly. Maybe they brought their own hiding place." He turned in a slow circle. "A ship of some kind. Hidden in plain sight. Oh, probably not with a chameleon circuit like a TARDIS, but perhaps a cloaking shield. In which case, it's going to be giving off faint tachyeon traces." He pulled his laser screwdriver out of his pocket. "Which I could pick up with this/" He twirled it between his fingers and gave the Doctor a look of mild disdain. "Your primitive sonic device could probably pick them up, too, but it would look far less cool."

He didn't look as impressed as the Master might have wanted. "If you could cease inflating your ego, and simply find the traces, we would be grateful," the Doctor sighed at him.

"You lead, we'll follow," Jo said, and smiled at the Master. Of course it would also make it easier to keep an eye on him if he was in sight.

The Master gave the Doctor a sidelong glance, ignoring Jo completely, then activated his screwdriver and turned until he caught the signal.

"Tachyeon energy," he declared, heading in that direction.

The Doctor held out his elbow to Jo and flourished a gesture after the Master. He probably should take the situation more seriously - and he most likely was - but for now, there was room for a lack of seriousness.

Not that the term 'Tachyeon energy' exactly filled him with peals of laughter. However, it was the Master tracking them, not him. He was likely to first bare the grunt of whatever they may or may not have waiting for them.

Jo took the Doctor's elbow and whispered, "What's tachyeon energy?" to him. "Is it something to do with spaceships?" She guessed it was, but wasn't sure it was possible to tell with this Master.

"Tachyeon energy is a type of energy from the Tachyeon empire. It exists only there because they're quite a jealous and secretive race of people," the Doctor explained in a whisper. "They don't share anything, and few others have landed on their planet and lived to tell the tale, so a signal is being picked up here of all places is quite extraordinary. We'll need to keep our wits about us."

"Oh, please," the Master told him. "Stolen cloaking technology is rife with it. Secretive and jealous protection is only for people who play nice."

"Which clearly isn't you," the Doctor retorted louder than a whisper. "And I haven't seen it in any of the cloaking technology I've come across. Makes me wonder what you've been doing all of these years - but I don't need to know!"

"Doctor," Jo said in a warning tone. "Let's see when we get there whether it's someone from the Tachyeon Empire or someone who's stolen their technology."

"The sort of people who interfere with a primitive society are the sort who steal," the Master said. He checked the direction and changed course slightly.
