IMO it's solely that people are paying attention now. I'm also confused by the idea that 5 in a week is "a lot", considering there are stats saying at least once a day somewhere in the US a GLBT person commits suicide - some stats say like every 10-12 hours.

Agreed. The media has simply found a new drama to hitch themselves to. Come November, we're not going to hear another peep about gay suicides.

Those statistics are absolutely tragic, though.

I think it is an increase in media attention. And I realize that it's important that this be reported on, but I must say that as someone who survived an attempt (this was 8 years ago, I'm ok now) it's pretty goddamn jarring to see this stuff practically every time I turn on my computer this week.

The good news is that people who might not otherwise be in tune with this sort of thing ARE paying attention and do seem to be genuinely saddened by it.
