It combines the same-sex issue with immigration issues. Two very hot-button issues in various sectors of the country.

I know that both immigration and same-sex marriage are hot button issues, but it just seems like something that is a matter of fundamental fairness and equality that has nothing to do with religion or tradition. It seems even more mean spirited to oppose something like this than gay marriage (which is illogical enough).

"Fundamental" "religion" "tradition" "illogical"

I hit your keywords there that explain it all. ;)

The fruits of a hard-line immigration stance that has thoroughly divided Americans over immigration.

I think one issue, as was outlined in the CNN article, is that because gay and lesbian couples can't get married in most states yet, you would have to bring the non-resident over as a "partner"--which is a whole lot less permanent-sounding relationship than "husband" or "wife". So I think people are freaking out about "all these people" coming into the country as "partners" of someone living here and then breaking things off with them after they get their green card.

I can't imagine there will be much more of a problem with that than we currently have with hetero green card marriages, but you never know, and it scares people--why it's so scary to have people from other countries come to live here I don't know, but it's a hot button for a lot of people.
