I don't know if you're still collecting suggestions, but "Sherlock Holmes and/or Doctor Watson" have occurred to me. I mean when one of the all time classic Sherlock Holmes quotes is, "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth," those are some very flexible characters. All they need in any given universe is an opportunity to see how something is more improbable rather than impossible. ;-)
