Canon AUs

There's a tag on AO3 for 'Alternate Universe -- Canon' which, I will freely admit, made me spend five minutes going, "What the hell?"  Then Alysswolf went, "Oh, right, Star Trek Mirroverse, or the Buffy ep where there's an evil Willow."  And we spent the next ten minutes going, 'Huh, what else?"  She came up with the Stargate Quantum mirrors and ( Read more... )

Also Charmed (which you probably don't watch) Evil Wyatt future and (yet another) mirrorverse.

I thought "AU -- Canon" just mean an AU that was close to canon, where it's the same universe but something different happened--Jesse didn't get vamped in Buffy, for instance. Same world, same characters, same setting, just one altered event. As opposed to AUs with a radically different setting (they're all in high school or a rock band), time (modern day Merlin, ancient Roman Sentinel), or different universe rules (Buffy or Supernatural without magic, NCIS or West Wing with magic, US still part of British empire).

Now I wonder how it's actually getting used at AO3. I suspect it's a mix of your understanding and mine, which would make it...interesting...to find either kind of story.

I would have just called those an AU, honestly, or maybe a 'one change' AU. I don't think there *are* explanations of the common tags at AO3, which undoubtedly *does* make it interesting.

Judging from the sheer number of 'in canon' AUs people are listing, it would certainly make sense to have a tag for such.

Doctor Who, Amy's Choice, Army of Ghosts, Rise of the Cyberman and a few others. One AU and several parallel worlds. Also, the one where Rose comes back has two parallel worlds in it.

Hi, Rhi!

Hello, yourself! And yes, I'm getting the distinct impression that Dr. Who has lots of AUs -- thanks!

It's a really terrific show. If you haven't, I highly recommend it. My kids love it, too.

I've seen bits here and there. Individual eps and such. As of yet, it hasn't grabbed me to the point of being must-see TV, but honestly, I'm not much of a TV person. (Now, if it does, I know who'll have DVDs in town for me to borrow... ;->) Thanks for the rec, however!
