Little black dresses of fandoms

Jan 25, 2010 22:04

I've been thinking about little black dresses of fandom while I sort out what I'm writing next. Partly I've been thinking not just about who are the LBDs but what makes them LBDs. To me, it seems to come down to two things:

1) They could turn up anywhere (and/or people come to them).
2) You can easily imagine them running into/talking to almost ( Read more... )

fandoms: buffy the vampire slayer, meta, fandoms: x-files, fandoms: eureka, fandoms: witchblade, fandoms: discworld, fandoms: warehouse 13, fandoms: highlander

Tim Riggins is my LBD. He's a sweet-hearted hell-raiser and mischief maker, but it's his core of inner sweetness that makes him good at reading people.

Plus, to be blunt about it, he's white trash. He's fucked around a lot, knows how to turn on the charm, and he's got a certain set of criminal skills that come in handy from time to time.

Oh, yeah, he sounds like he could end up anywhere!

The very first ever slash story I read - when I began reading it I didn't know what slash WAS - was a Sharpe story that paired Methos with Richard Sharpe . For those who don't know the Sharpe stories they are set in the Napolianic era, mostly in Spain during the Peninsular Wars. I was so ignorant of fan fic in general and slash in particular, that I thought it was so weird that the author used a name from another show for their character - I was half way through the story before I realized that it was the same character in Highlander. So - that first story opened my eyes to fan fiction, slash writing, AND hot man-on-man sex all in one go (oh the visual - Sean Bean and Peter WIngfield - woooof - stays with me to this day). LOL ( ... )

Gah! Methos was the second LBD in fandom, and I forgot to put him on the list. (But then half of the HL characters are LBDs, which is how the fandom has so many crossovers.) Thank you for the reminder - as soon as I quit headdesking....

kinda cliche, but can literally show up anywhere, anywhen would be the Doctor. Some would work better than others (10 over 9, frex), but pretty much any of the recent Doctors will do.

Otherwise, I pretty much like your list. Hadn't thought about Pete from W13, but it does work. (I'm also thinking the chaos if Pete has go anywhere near Eureka for a pick-up...)

Yeah the Doctor(s) can, and Jack Harkness is every bit as bad. Yeah, W13 seems like such an obvious one, and Artie is a trickster type, but Pete's the friendly one of that crowd. Although, you know, Artie's boss, Mrs. What's Her Name, would make an appallingly good LBD. Someone should write that.

::laughing:: Honestly, there's probably at least one LBD in every fandom. Some days, a full list would be very helpful.

Oh, my. Mrs. Frederic and the Board would be phenomenal. That ep where we see the Board? Think of all the fandoms that could work in.

Captain Jack Harkness. Time jumping con man/secret agent just screams shenanigans and and he can literally show up anywhere and any time.

Daniel Jackson from SG1 seems to get a lot of consulting jobs, too. And if he doesn't get those, he gets kidnapped by some power mad evil person.

Jessica Fletcher. That woman has a niece or nephew everywhere. And if she doesn't, there always seems to be some slightly hapless police officer, who could use a little nudging in the right direction.

::headdesk:: I forgot Jack Harkness!! I meant to put him on this list, too -- Thank you!

Yup, Daniel would make sense, and Jessica Fletcher, like Miss Marple, has relatives and acquaintances everywhere!

And, of course, MacGyver.

Voting for Methos here. Or Duncan for that matter. He's been so many places I think he could fit in almost any canon-verse.

::grinning:: Duncan's like the Doctors -- he has been all over the place. And Methos *was* the second LBD in fandom, so I'm hideously embarrassed about forgetting to put him on the list.
