Oh, my. Better than Niven did with that idea. And now I'm thinking 'bout all we saw of Krycek after that, all the way to that garage, and some things make more sense.....

Niven played with this? Really? Huh. And yeah, it would make more sense of that garage scene. Although, really, just about anything would make more sense than that scene. It's a mess!!

Re Niven: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Hamilton and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatlander_(short_story_collection).

As for the garage scene -- excellent performances by all three actors, beautifully done, but once you get past that.....wtf?!? It makes no sense, in no way does it make sense. Even for the X-verse. The fics that show that Krycek as a copy or clone help a little, but..... ::shrug::

Yeah, that garage scene... only makes sense for any two of the three characters. I can make it make sense for any two, but can't manage all three. Very frustrating, so I just gave up and quit canon just before the end of 7th season.

And thanks for the links!

This is poetically beautiful and utterly compelling. Damn that it's not novel length. I love this Alexei.

That said, if I asked you to recommend novels in a similar vein (not Books of Magic mind which I read a decade back, though I adore Gaiman) what would you pimp?

Thank you! The novel length is, I think, what I'm gearing up to write next month. But I really enjoyed writing this, oddly enough.

Hmm. In a similar vein... I'd suggest McKillip, the Riddlemaster of Hed in particular although also Ombria in Shadow, and maybe Hughart's Bridge of Birds. Are you looking for lyric fantasy, dark fantasy, what?

All that said, thank you, I'm really glad people liked it!

I read McKillip's Riddlemaster trilogy this summer and adored it. Weirdly, or not Deth 'reminded' me of Methos, but that aside I just loved the lush tone of the book.

I've ordered a second hand copy of Song for the Basilik (out of print don't you know?) which is making its way to the UK from Canada as we speak, but I hadn't heard of Hugart's Bridge of Birds.

I think what I'm looking for is lyrical with a dark tinge. chiaroscuro if you will *g* But if that's too complex just fantasy that you loved that's a little dark.

Will google Hughart. Oh and if I like the McKillip when it arrives I'll undoubtedly become completist about reading her work. *g*

If you want some brief idea of what I have read in SF/Fantasy:

I've read a lot of De Lint (not that dark and often hit and miss where lyrical is concerned, my favourite of his is Trader) some Gaiman (love his ideas more than his style I think) some Francesca Lia Block (her Greek Myths trilogy is lovely writing but not so hot on plot to my mind - more poetry than story somehow, I'm ( ... )

Hmm. For lyrical, definitely try McKillip (her darkness varies) and Hughart (who can make me cry on rereading, even if he only has three books). And other than that, I'm not sure who to suggest. (And had no idea Kushner wrote HL!!) I'm not usually much for dark, sorry -- this was kind of a surprise, if a fun one. Hmm. Outside of print fic, have you read all of ciceqi's stuff? AKA, Sleeps With Coyotes? Back in print, what about Mary Renault, or Fred Saberhagen's Dracula novels? And Carole Nelson Douglas' Irene Adler novels? Last, but certainly not least, have you read anything by Martha Wells? Death of the Necromancer is a *gem*.

OMG, just *thunk* (jaw hits desk). Your wordsmithing is, as always, superb. A perfect run up to Hallows!

Wonderful story, great imagery.

Although Krycek must have still been high on painkillers for the Blazing Saddles bit.

Thanks for writing and thanks for sharing it.

I'm amazed he has it memorized. That must have been a boring stakeout at some point! Glad you liked it, though. I really enjoyed writing this one.
