Tagging in LJ

Aug 05, 2008 13:55

When last I checked, LJ had a major bug when you exceeded 1000 unique tags for your entries -- the system cannot write a 1001st tag to the database and has ginormous problems. There is a parallel problem if you try to track 1001 things -- database is overfull and problems ensue. When I ran into the latter problem, the staff at LJ could only offer ( Read more... )

The only thing that makes sense is that your journal title starts with "Gibbon". But that would make this tag apply to your entire journal, so I don't know why for this specific entry.

Your journal name is Gibbon-Grain Gazette and Gibbons are the small apes in the family Hylobatidae.

That's the best linkage I can come up with.

Yes -- but it seems that Manage Tags won't let you change the name of a tag to something that already exists. So if "work" and "job" are both in existence, you cannot change the "work" ones to say "job"...unless I am missing something.

I hit the limit quite some time ago without realizing there was a limit. Then I started trying to find old entries and realized some tags were missing from my tags page. It turns out, the tags did get saved with the entries, they just couldn't accessed via their tags (if that makes any sense). I pretty much had to consolidate tons of tags (one of my consolidations was the movie one in your example). I'm still very torn about it. I think a lot of my tags have become useless because they are too generic, and I use them too much.

The whole feature needs a serious rethink and overhaul. There should be a way to do google-like searches for any word (tag or not) as well as searches for multiple tags at once. And that horrible thread collapse business that occurs when an entry eclipses 50 comments? That's just overflowing with fail. They need to just turn that off. But I won't hold my breath. It seems like there's been a huge slowdown in improvements since the new ownership.

Ye gods--1000. I'd be amazed if I got up to 100. How do you remember all of those??
