Reminders, Readings, and Ridiculousness.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that the deadline for the Tower of the Hand contest arrives tomorrow.  E-mail in your guesses about if and when we will be seeing ADWD in 2009.

On another note, here is a lengthy, yet interesting article by Steve Tompkins of The Cimmerian about the wait for ADWD.   We get a lukewarm mention in the article, ( Read more... )

Lady Stoneheart is preferable to The Hangwoman, i think.
Honourable mention surely also has to go to "The Barber". Because he can throw an axe so close as to shave you. So his nickname is because he can ALMOST kill you? And its hardly going to inspire fear.

And i don't think anyone on here has said ADWD is going to suck. It contains every single interesting character from the series. Its set up north and over seas, where all the cool shit happens. And for all our criticism's of his writing style, the story he writes is still GRRM's strongest card.

And that articles main point is that the previous books have been so good that it is worth the wait, as long as the next book doesnt suck like various other "mid way" books have in long series', ie Wheel of Time and The Dark Tower. Despite the fact that he himself acknowledges earlier that A FEAST FOR CROWS HAS ALREADY FILLED THAT ROLE.

Admittedly, I did say ADWD is going to suck. I believe this because it has taken far too long, which is never good, like when a film goes through ten script rewrites during production.

I think we will end up with some interesting chapters and some mind-numbingly dull ones. I think it will be better than AFFC but still worse than the first three books. Everything is just far too spread out, and too many new characters have been introduced, for me to really have high expectations. After all, don't think that ADWD might not introduce a whole slew of new people into the mix, just like AFFC did.

Also just read the link again and Varamyr is only the prologue PoV character, so thats one less new thread to worry about.

I'd have to guess in 2009, by my estimates we should see the book in .. Late 2010 or early 2011

In fairness (and not to be negative), a lot of historic nick-names are pretty worthless, too. For every Richard the Lionheart, you have a Charles the Bald, or Charles the Fat, or whatever. Sometimes nick-names are just dumb. So, I guess, even if Stoneheart is dumb, at least he gets points for attempted creativity. Plus, I think Lem Lemon-cloak is much more stupid.

When I was in junior high I wrote a note to my girlfriend to break up with her. In it, I said she had a stone heart.

You give Tompkins too much credit. He's less an "adept writer" and more a self-infatuated one. Reading his essay was an enormous chore. He's obviously immersed himself in too much early fantasy, adopted a similar tone and fallen in love with it. Rarely have I seen so much overcooked prose larded with recondite references and convoluted arguments revolving endlessly around themselves without ever getting to the point. I don't know if Tompkins ever convinces anyone of his arguments. I suspect he just bores people into submission.

As for nicknames, Darkstar is still stupider than Lady Stoneheart.

Amen to that. He references King squeezing out the final volumes of The Dark Tower, but quite honestly, this guy appears to have the opposite problem - diarrhea of the pen. Did he get paid by the syllable? I'm a pretty intelligent person, but halfway through the article, I'm pulling out a dictionary and saying "WTF is his point?"

And according to what I had heard, King finished the Dark Tower series after getting into a bad car accident, out of fear that he would die with the series unfinished.

You'd think Martin would get the hint.
