Last Year (Travel and Conventions)

Jan 01, 2016 18:19

I did a lot of travelling last year. Probably too much. You don't have to chide me about that. I know, believe me, I know. I am trying to cut down on travel this year and in subsequent years, at least until Ice & Fire is done ( Read more... )

Europe pics please.🙏🏼

Just a few perhaps? Those you'd like landlocked Americans to see . . .

Did you read the blog where Martin indicates that people keep distracting him from writing by asking him to go places and do things. I'm sure many people would love to see his pictures, but if he doesn't already have it on his schedule, why are you putting one more thing on his "To Do" list?

Just my opinion of course - but in my view the man and his real life adventures are more important and deserve more respect than his stories. Don't get me wrong, I'm eternally thankful for authors who can take me away from it all. I'm also very glad that in this day and age they can be made aware they're appreciated as human beings. And yes I'm jealous of the experience of seeing so much of the world firsthand. 👍

I took it, and very well could be wrong, that he loves to travel and even though some are commitments and obligations, he jumps at the chance. So when people ask him to go to things, especially if it is something that he hasn't done before he loves the experience and doesn't see it as a distraction as much as his fans do.

Asking about pictures isn't putting another thing on a "To Do" list, it is showing interest in something he is fascinated with and obviously loves. The pictures were in the original post, but it's just a hassle to go through the process of posting again because he figures no one would be interested (what a sad thought). I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing him enjoying himself though.

Again, just my interpretation.

"...that ConQuest in KC was something special"

I seem to recall you were a champion of KC getting WorldCon this year, as well. I'm a native, and I don't have the money to go to a WorldCon anywhere else, so my thanks for that.

May I chalk it up to an appreciation of good barbecue?

Love KC barbeque. Especially burnt ends.

But I have a long love affair with KC fandom that goes way deeper.

And Big Mac in 1976 was the Best Worldcon Of All Time, IMNSHO. (Even though I lost two Hugos there).

I'm a Kansas Citian, and wasn't able to make ConQuest last year due to prior commitments, so I'm excited to see you're coming back to KC for WorldCon and burnt ends.

Maybe you're our lucky sports charm, too?

I loved seeing you in person in Hamburg, it was a fun evening. Hope you will be able to return to Germany (or at least Europe) in future time :)

If you were the master of both time and space, where would you go?

I do envy Doctor Who his TARDIS.

On that note, just to completely change the topic, have you seen the recent Doctor Who episode 'Heaven Sent'? If not, you really should. One of the best TV episodes of 2015.

I second this ^. Peter Capaldi deserves an award for his perfomance.

The tone of this post makes me sad ("some of you love to remind me of [your mortality]" and "Many would rather I never ever got up from my computer"). I feel shitty about how bad the fandom's relationship with you has gotten.

I can sympathize with the mentality of some of the more rabid fans, I know how they got there and have the same impulses. But I also hope you take all your chances to travel and enjoy life. You've earned your position and deserve some leisure.

It's not everyone. Most of my fans are great.

But it's enough to be annoying.
