I was watching Psycho, the classic version when I wrote this. I mean, the Dumbledore household has so many secrets...

...and I grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where Joss made up wishverse in respond to how much worse can life on the hellmouth get? In wishverse, it wasn't so much the vampires have completely taken over Sunnydale, as the people who are supposed to be good and friends, aren't. Pass by each other's deaths unmoved, beautiful relationships never realized.

As horrible as it sounds, Gellert, not Ariana, not Alberforth, was the death that would break Albus. I get the sense that he was feeling the suffocation before Gellert arrives, I mean, family is family, but responsibility shouldered alone is just crushing.
