I think that while the course of Gellert and Albus's love in canon did not run smoothly, it could have actually turned out worse, let me show you it;

There was no need for a funeral, and its attendant whispers. That Durmstrang boy was trouble and had no one else here but his old grand aunt. Bathhilda Bagshot haven’t seen her nephew for a whole week at the end of summer, when she came home to his room emptied and all his things gone.
Alberforth went back to school, because it was expected, Ariana's screaming and Albus's silence ringing in his ears. Alberforth went back to Hogwarts, while quiet, quiet, Albus, stayed with Ariana, in Godric's Hollow, where nobody bothered them with any questions as the years goes by.
