Good evening, my dear companions in the land of freedom from academia. Despite our lack of structured study, I have a question for anyone familiar with the fascinating world of Muggle computing and what is apparently known colloquially as the "world wide web ( Read more... )

I thought I might take this opportunity to highlight the woeful inadequacy of Muggle Studies in general and the poor excuses for books that have been made available to me in my local wizarding library. I find the bookshop on the high street has been far more enlightening.

Thank you for helping me narrow it down, however.
Would you care to join me in London at some point, or will you be too busy wading through your brother's indecent paraphernalia to mock my publicly apparent lack of computer knowledge?

Goodness, my efforts to connect with my muggle-born friends are causing me unpopularity in both circles!
It seems that I simply can't win - not that coolness points meant anything to me. After all, what I am lacking in that department I'm sure I can make up in ways you couldn't even comprehend.

So. Next weekend, Dave Strider.
I will be expecting you at midday at the floo network fireplace near Victoria Station. I am going to count on you to make sure I'm using muggle transport to the PC world and Apple Shops appropriately.
Do not forget.

You lost me at colloquially.

It's alright, my dear. I was told I'd understand when I'm older, too.

Hey! Are you calling me a kid?

Not at all. I'm saying that you'll probably understand eventually.

I use Windows and so am most familiar with it.

Getting a computer depends a lot upon what it is you plan on doing with it. Some things require the processing power of a desktop, otherwise I get along fine with a laptop.

Thank you so much for your advice, Professor.

At present I'm only planning to use it in communicating with my very good muggle-born friends who assure me that Skype is preferable to owl post or floo powder. The project itself is a secret from my mother, so I think a "laptop" is likely to be more portable for the purposes of concealment..

Despite the fact that Windows seems to be more common, I'm quite drawn to the elegance of the Mac interface - from what I've seen in books and muggle shop windows. I think I shall look into it further on a small trip down to London.

Windows are better for games, Macs are better for showing off.

I do so like showing off. What kind of games would one play?

It's pointless. People think they look cooler with a Mac. They don't.

Video games.

Why not? As my dear friend Dave would point out, coolness points are not in my agenda. However, I'm curious about this branding and the odd cultural connotations it appears to possess.

I have never played video games before. Are they enjoyable? Just what is their appeal?

Thank you, Sollux. Your information is of great help to me - I hope you know that I appreciate your benign nature and helpful words of advice. Please don't hate yourself for it, it's bad for what appears to be your already suffering self-esteem.
Perhaps it would help to explain that I haven't the hope of challenging any of the arguments you present, so I will take them into account when making my choices in purchasing all future muggle appliances.

In all seriousness though, I'm grateful. This was very informative.
