Moving Out
Moving Out

Addison slammed the door of her car shut and ran up the steps of the trailer. She paused for a moment, catching a glimpse of herself in the window. She hurriedly smoothed down her skirt and took a breath. Inside the trailer, Derek heard the knock at the door,
“It’s open.” he called from the bathroom. “Come on in.” Cautiously, Addison stepped into the small space and looked around her. Everything was just as she remembered it. The tiny kitchen, the bathroom that shut like a cupboard, the bedroom. She shut the front door.
“Addie?” Derek was coming towards her.
“Hey,” she said, brightly, giving him a smile.
“Hey yourself.” he returned her smile and she caught her breath. She could never resist that smile. She rallied herself,
“Shall we get going then?” she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“Ready when you are. Are the boxes-” he gestured towards the door.
“In the car, yeah. Shall I-” she finished, turning back towards the door.
“No I’ll get them,” he said, moving to take the keys. As he did their hands brushed. Their eyes met for a moment.
“I’ll just-“ Derek pulled open the door again.
“Yeah,” she said softly. She supposed she’d better make a start and moved across the small room to open one of the cupboards. The familiar smell of Derek’s aftershave wafted out and she hurriedly closed the doors. Derek’s cupboard, silly of her to forget. She opened another and began to sift through her clothes; she hadn’t seen some of these things for years. Moving in she’d just shoved everything in; she hadn’t looked closely. Her fingers caught on a silk evening gown. Derek, coming in behind her, carrying an armful of boxes, heard the sharp intake of breath.
“Anything wrong?”
“Nothing, I just forgot I had some of this stuff,” she replied, turning to smile at him.
“That’s what comes from having so many clothes,” he joked, “Coffee?”
“Yeah, sure. Thanks Derek.” She watched him go and turned back to the dress in her hands. She remembered the last time she’d worn it. One of the surgical gatherings, she couldn’t quite remember which one. She’d never really been a fan of those things- too many egos in one room. But that night had been different. That night, he’d proposed. She’d said yes, of course, and as she did, she’d had this feeling. She had been absolutely certain that she would spend the rest of her life with Derek. And here she was, moving her things out of his trailer. More fool her. She dragged one of the boxes towards her, and began to fill one it with clothes, carefully folding them first. There was no need to rush. This could be the last day she and Derek spent together. She was pulled out of her musings by the slam of another car door. She glanced out of the window and caught sight of- oh no.

In the kitchen, waiting for the kettle to boil, Derek was looking at the painting that hung over the sink. He’d bought it for Addison in Greece years ago. On their honeymoon. She’d always loved shopping in the chaotic markets, bartering for things she didn’t need or would never wear. As soon as she’d seen this painting, she’d fallen in love with it. He took it down and looked at it closely. A little house surrounded by big fir trees.
“That’ll be our house one day,” she’d said, dreamily and he’d teased her for her sentimentality. But he’d bought it for her anyway, secretly liking the idea. He run a hand through his hair and looked out at the trees that surrounded the trailer. Realising the similarity, he smiled wryly to himself. He heard a knock at the door and Addison’s voice,
“Not a problem, come on in. I’ll get Derek.” He made his way to the door, balancing the coffee cups.

She knew she shouldn’t have come today. She’d woken up and known it wasn’t a good idea. But she’d been so keen to see Derek. They’d both been working flat out for the past few days and had barely seen each other. So she’d come anyway, only to have her foreboding confirmed at the sight of Addison’s car parked alongside his. She was tempted to drive off again, but Addison had seen her through the window. Cursing under her breath, she knocked on the door, smoothing down her untidy hair. If she’d known Addison was going to be there, she’d have worn something smarter than an old t-shirt and jeans.

Addison opened the door and forced herself to smile.
“Hi Meredith.”
“Addison, hi.” Meredith pulled at her t-shirt and fiddled nervously with her hair. “Sorry if I’m intruding, I didn’t know you’d be here.”
“Not a problem, come on in.” Addison said, stepping aside to let her in. Meredith glanced at the boxes around her and wondered where to sit down. She walked into the bedroom, awkwardly perching herself on the bed
“I’ll get Derek.”

Addison made her way towards the kitchen and bumped into Derek .
“Hey,” he said, “We got company?” he handed her one of the coffee cups and took a sip from the other. Addison looked at him,
“Yeah, uh, Meredith Grey is here, actually.” Derek paused mid-sip and glanced at her quickly.
“Seriously?” he asked casually. “You sent her away?”
“No,” Addison sighed, she’s in our bedroom.” she stopped, “Your bedroom. She’s in your bedroom.”
“I can send her away,” Derek offered, looking towards the bedroom. Addison turned back towards her packing,
“That’s ok. You go and see Meredith.” Needing no further encouragement, Derek smiled at Addison and walked to the bedroom. Addison watched him go and felt the sinking feeling she’d grown so accustomed to. She returned to the cupboards, pulled another box towards her and wearily resumed her packing.

“Meredith!” came a voice from the cramped hallway. Derek entered the bedroom and held out his coffee cup to the girl smiling up at him from the bed. He leaned against the doorway and smiled at her.
“Thankyou.” she said, raising the steaming coffee to her lips. She took a sip and saw him looking at her. “I’m drinking your coffee, aren’t I?” she smiled at him.
“Actually, yes. You are.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know she was… I mean that you were… That this was happening today..” she finished lamely. She shifted her position on the bed.
“I know,” he said, smiling at her.
“Why are you smiling?” she asked, resting the cup on her knee.
“You realise who you are, don’t you?” he was grinning at her now.
“What do you mean?” she looked up at him, confused.
“You’re that girl. You’re the girl who shows up unannounced at her boyfriend’s place when the ex is moving out.”
“Apparently I am.” she said, smiling back at him. “And I apologise. I really had no idea she was going to.. That this was going to be happening today.” His eyes twinkled,
“That girl never does.”

Addison listened to the murmur of voices in the tiny bedroom. She didn’t know why seeing the two of them together was still so painful. She was used to it; it’d been going on for long enough. She sighed and blinked quickly. She concentrated on packing, cramming things haphazardly into boxes. She just wanted to be gone. She didn’t want to remember the past with Meredith in the next room. Stuffing the remaining clothes into a box, she pulled open the door. One by one she dumped the boxes into the car. There weren’t that many. Most of her things were still at their old place. She sighed and returned to the trailer. She could hear Meredith and Derek laughing. Meredith seemed to be protesting about something. She pushed open the door,
“I think I’ve finished.” she said cheerily. Derek’s face fell immediately,
“Addison-” he began.
“So I think I’ll get out of your way.” She looked down at where Meredith was sitting cross-legged on the bed.
Derek followed her out of the door and to her car. She moved to get into the driver’s seat, but he grabbed her arm.
“Addie.” she turned to face him. “I’m sorry for..” he trailed off.
“Bye Derek.” she said softly, kissing him on the cheek and she got into her car. Taking one final look over her shoulder, she started the engine and reversed out of the clearing. Glancing in her mirror, she saw Meredith take hold of Derek’s hand. She looked away, selected first gear and pushed down hard on the accelerator.

The End
