One summer near San Diego, after my brother graduated, I think, but before his first tour, he and I were out in the surf trying to smoke and tread water at the same time. Before we realized it, a riptide had taken us a hundred yards from shore, our cigarettes were soaked, and we mocked each other as we gamely paddled on and the undertow sucked at us ( ... )
