I tend to think that ereaders do lessen retention. From my experiments with readers I didn't linger over pages, reading. It speeds up the reading process...

I can't read well on my laptop or many other screens so I'm not surprised by these findings. However, I have kindle with e-ink, which is not backlit. The screens appear to have the texture of paper somehow and I find I can read from it almost as well as a paper book. Also, for my aging eyes, it's wonderful to be able to choose my own font size! What holds me back is the idea of paying for an e-book. I don't buy many books for my e-reader, mostly Shadow Unit, because if I like a book enough to buy it, I want to hold it in my hands and see it on the shelf.

I will publicly admit that I bought a Kindle two months ago. It's most likely the type of decision that the vast majority of people would never even think twice about, but it was something I practically agonized over (I will forever lament the extinction of actual bookstores where I could choose my own copy, rather than the proverbial Russian Roulette of having to accept the condition of whatever arrives in the box from the nearest online fulfillment center ( ... )
