Well, the results of my experiment were interesting, though not especially dramatic. I was up until sometime just after five. The sky was swiftly brightening, the way it does here. Ah, Punk Paxton. Never has the line "Fuck you, asshole" been so important. (One critic, noting how the Terminator adds that to its records along with "Yes," "No," "What?," "Go Away," "Please Come Back Later" and "Fuck you," said "You have to love an utterly debased future technology that makes sure to differentiate between insults and really personal insults.") And Paxton delivered that line with verve.

I was hoping the first film holds up; been years since I've seen all of it. But (trivia!) I'm sure the Aliens producers felt more confident when they saw it: they'd hired Cameron to write Aliens with them before The Terminator even came out. I've read a copy of the Aliens story treatment Cameron co-wrote (a few details here), and it's dated 1983, a year before Terminator was released. Probably hadn't even been filmed yet, is my guess. (Among the details: no Burke, no plot to impregnate Ripley and Newt with the creatures, but Ripley, Newt and Hicks get briefly cocooned, and Bishop refuses to rescue them due to possible alien ( ... )
