I was hoping the first film holds up; been years since I've seen all of it. But (trivia!) I'm sure the Aliens producers felt more confident when they saw it: they'd hired Cameron to write Aliens with them before The Terminator even came out. I've read a copy of the Aliens story treatment Cameron co-wrote (a few details here), and it's dated 1983, a year before Terminator was released. Probably hadn't even been filmed yet, is my guess. (Among the details: no Burke, no plot to impregnate Ripley and Newt with the creatures, but Ripley, Newt and Hicks get briefly cocooned, and Bishop refuses to rescue them due to possible alien contamination. Ripley winds up piloting a colonial shuttle to escape.)
Aliens definitely holds up. I got to see the Special Edition projected digitally in April in a local theater. I love that film.
