February is the Sunday of months...

There was work yesterday. Tinkering with the proposal for Joey LaFaye, which I've sent to my agent. Today I'll need to begin work on the proposal for the book after Joey LaFaye. As yet, it has no title. Yesterday, I looked at the proposal we used to sell Daughter of Hounds and was a bit astounded and embarrassed at how awful it was, and at how ( Read more... )

I'm tempted to post it here, behind a cut, as it certainly illustrates what I've said before about the proposals I write for novels having very little to do with the forms the novels eventually take. But it's three pages long. Maybe I could post excerpts.

I'd love to see the differences. What did you generally think-or tell your agent you thought-Daughter of Hounds was going to be like when you started?

Also, I wrote a poem yesterday, "Nest." Presently, it exists in two forms, the original and a cut-up "remix" version.

Awesome.

I know that I, for one, would love to read the proposal, just to see what you mean by the difference between it and the finish book. Perhaps save it as a PDF file on the Mac and upload it and then just link to it, that way it won't be a huge post on LJ.

Just a thought.

Seconded, Caitlin. I would be intrigued to read it, once I'm done with the actual book. I'm always interested in hearing you talk about how your stories evolved (I'm thinking of Trilobite: the Writing of Threshold). I'll leave it to those with better Mac-Fu than I to suggest how to put up the proposal.

And by the way, there's several flavors of True in your title.

Mmm. Poems about ravens... I'm tempted to try eBay (first time ever...)
Your marketing savvy is impressive.

I have been fascinated with Uma's feet ever since Kill Bill Vol I. That scene in the back of the Pussy Wagon (or whatever that yellow truck was called) - Move your big toe. Move your big toe. Her feet are almost as unique/real-life/non-barbie looking as mine! (Mine are way less barbie-like, tho.) If her feet are in My Super-Ex Girlfriend, I might watch it!

It's cool to view the arc of her career from the tits girl in Dangerous Liasons to the very credible martial arts fighter she has become. She tends to choose interesting scripts.

Hey, Cait--I've been meaning to ask you:

If you've any old poems, song lyrics, or stuff of that nature lying around that you're not really doing anything with, kick 'em over my way. There are a number of Nyarlathotep tracks that could use vocals of some sort, but I'm not much of a songwriter, and I think it would be...as the kids put it, totally bitchin'> to work your linguistic presence into some of our material!

I'd love to see the proposal, as I'm sure many others would. And I definitely wouldn't be deterred by reading three pages behind a cut if you just wanted to drop it into a post. Understandable if you don't, of course, but it won't go unread if you do choose to post it.

Let it happen, which is how I usually think of the writing of novels.

When you're thinking about the novels as they're evolving, are you thinking about things abstractly, in terms of how X works as a protagonist, or how Y serves as an antagonist, whether there's too much/enough conflict? Or is it more along the lines of whether what's happening is the "right" thing to happen? (Not that the two are necessarily mutually exclusive.)
